Baby Powder, must have Baby Powder

June 20, 2007

I received a lot of baby powder at my baby showers. Then I went home and read all these books/articles about how you should only use cornstarch on babies, not baby powder. (They should really change the name then.) So, the various containers were relegated to a dark corner of the hall closet and have been gathering dust ever since.

Until today.

See, I love the beach. I would live on it if I could but visiting is the next best thing. The only problem with taking two toddlers to the beach is the sand. Sand is sneaky. It shows up in the darnedest places and won’t leave. It turns up in every crevice and skin fold. Especially at diaper change time. It won’t brush off and no matter how carefully you rinse in the ocean it’s not leaving until you take a shower. This is particularly troubling during those pesky times when you need to brush some sand off your darling daughter’s face because her sister threw a shovelful of the stuff at her…well, naturally, your own hands are also covered in the insidious substance.

Today I tested the best, most wonderful, most fantastic use for baby powder. If your hand is covered in sand just pour some baby powder on and it brushes away like magic. Seriously, it just disappears. It’s more effective than sea water, completely portable, and just $0.99 at many stores. (Or free if you happen to have a lifetime’s supply in your bathroom closet.) Even the worst areas were a breeze to clean. (Read: diaper change time no longer required a high pressure hose and 40 gallons of water.)

The MOM who taught me about this is my new favorite person. She’s also selling her handmade “World’s Cutest Reversible Beach Bag” over at If you need to carry around multiple sippy cups and baby gear these bags are great. It has six pockets which means after 2 sippy cups, diapers, wipes, and sunscreen, you still have room for the baby powder!

I really detest the beach. Can’t stand sand. My kids LOVE sand. Baby Powder is bought in bulk here.

After our recent SAND escapades, I’ll be sure to try out your baby powder trick (I have gallons collecting dust too). That is soooo cool. We moms should get paid for our brilliant ideas! Also, very cute bag.

Oh, baby powder works wonderfully for sand…love it. We definitely used it on our beach vacation in May. Unfortunately I won’t get to use it again until next summer.
