Fix! Fix! Fiiiixxxxxxxxx!!!!!!

March 4, 2008

At 2 years of age, R. is struggling with an important lesson. Mommy cannot fix everythiing. It’s a tough transition. She went from infancy where any time she cried for a bottle she got one to toddlerhood where (gasp!) there are limits to what Mommy can provide and what she is allowed to have. And then, today, she learned that Mommy doesn’t have super powers. It’s tough being 2 years old.

For the longest time, if something was “broken” then show it to Mommy, say “fix, pease” and it would get fixed. Bring a fold up doll stroller that was “broken” (aka – needed to be unfolded) and Mommy will fix. Same for the marker that was “fixed” by taking the cap off, the doll that was “fixed” by putting her hat on straight, and the potty that was “fixed” by settling the bowl back into place. Obviously, Mommy = superhero.

Until today.

Lately my kids decided that they want “monkey bananas.” Which means that they don’t want to eat them sliced up in a bowl but from the peel, whole, just like the monkeys in their books. They were eating monkey bananas this morning when, horror of horrors, R’s banana broke off. Which immediately started her on the “fix! fix! fiiiiixxxxxxxx!!!!” rant. R., just couldn’t grasp why I couldn’t fix her banana. And let me tell you, after 5 minutes of her wailing “fix!!!!!!!” I sure tried. But all the kings horses, and all the kings men, and all mommy’s efforts couldn’t put that $%!#@ banana back together again.

…If only I were a superhero.

Yup. It is tough being two. Try fixing yogurt that spills on the table. Try fixing an apple after you cut it and they didn’t want it cut. Grrrr…this too shall pass!
